Any type of abuse, (emotional, physical, sexual) whether past or current causes great emotional harm and needs to be addressed and worked through.  Abuse can cause depression, anxiety, panic and phobias.  Left untreated, it can also lead to addictive and self destructive behavior patterns.  It can affect a person’s ability to trust and have long lasting intimate relationships.  Often times, a person can feel isolated and alone, unable to feel understood by others.  Many times, there is confusion and conflicting feelings depending on who was the cause of the abuse.  Memories can sometimes be vivid or not well understood.  Unless the abuse can be talked about with a trained professional, it will interfere with a person’s ability to have a healthy and satisfying life, free from the chains of the abuse.
