Adapting to Life Transitions

Life presents us with many phases and stages.  Whether it is the birth of a child, a child leaving home, marriage, divorce, job change, geographic relocation, death of a loved one, illness or aging, these changes can create stress.  Even if a change is welcome, there can be stress just because it initiates transformation in our lives.  Often times, a life transition can create anxiety, feelings of loss of control or helplessness.  Change can also be experienced as an intrusion, one more thing to manage in an already busy life.

Life transitions and change are an inevitable part of existence.  It is a person’s flexibility and adaptability that will determine how the change will impact emotions and their sense of well-being.  Counseling can help by providing support, awareness, and the understanding needed to move through life’s transitional times.
